Hands free...it's the law!

Posted By: Becky | 9 Comments

In the province I live in, they are making cell phone usage while driving illegal very soon. I can see an influx of hands free accessories start to become really popular. BlackBerry came out with the visor mount (here is the video from the YouTube channel - http://bit.ly/visormount2)

Anyone else live in an area where it’s illegal to use a cell phone while driving? What do you do to keep safe?

I must be really old school, but because I don't work in a career field where the world will end if I don't pick up a call, I let calls go to a wonderful little invention called voicemail.  I confess that I do glance down at the caller ID...and if it's REALLY urgent, I use another wonderful little thing called speaker phone.  But that's rare, cuz I'm not a Very Important Person  .  The province I live in is in the process of passing hands free talking and no texting  laws too.  I find it scary as hell going 60 or 70 km/hr on a road, looking over and finding someone fully involved in texting.....I have a really graphic email with photos of a texting aftermath...real puke material.

Long story short, it's great to see that there are so many solutions and lots of users willing to use them.  Now if we can just convince some young people that they're not as bullet proof as they think.....life would be good!

The more I use Drivesafe.ly, the more I like it. The most recent version works with bluetooth stereo devices (they are still working on bluetooth headsets). I have a bluetooth audio adaptor on my motorcycle, so I can listen to music from my BB, answer phone calls (it automatically answers on teh 2nd ring, so I don't need to tka emy hands of the handlebars), and with Drivesafe.ly, it plays messages through my helmet. I haven't tried using Vlingo with the motorcycle - that idea just doesn't seem to sit well with me. It is so better to wait until I'm stopped to actually reply while on the bike.

ZoomSafer works great too, free for now. It lets a designated number of important contacts you designate the ability to call you and it goes over speaker phone. It quiets all alerts so you aren't tempted to read anything. And it reminds you to stay focused on the road. This is not only great for us adults, but also to give a good example to our teens.

I’m happy that a lot of cities are cracking down on people who text and make calls while driving by implementing laws. Makes me feel safe

They're pushing a no texting while driving law here in Cleveland, OH which I think is a good idea.  i've covered at leat two fatal accidents with teenagers that were texting while driving.

There are a couple of local communities in the Cleveland area that require hands free talking while driving.  And they do actively ticket.

I will have to check Drivesafe.ly out. Thanks for the tip!

Ooops - I just updated the link. It goes to the right place now

I pretty much do everything over my BT headset. Even in my office, it is much easier to talk without the phone to my ear. I can also take notes on my BB while in a phone call.

As for driving, I now use Drivesafe.ly to have SMS and e-mails read to me while driving.

I've tried Vlingo for dictating e-mails and text messages, but it is still way too hands-on for me to consider it to be hands-free. I'm still looking for a good dictation option.

I think the link you posted was incorrect. I clicked on it and it brought me to the video for "How to add a bookmark". I personally use the voice dialing and the speaker when I'm in the car! They keep talking about restircting phones in the car here in Philadelphia, but I doubt it will ever happen!
