Recycling Programs

Has anyone upgraded to a new device (or planning to?). What did you do with your old device? I know that some wireless providers offer a recycling program for older phones. Does yours?

Hi Becky,

A good place to donate an older phone is your local women's shelter. A lot of the women need a phone to protect themselves in emergency situations. Just make sure to delete/clean all your info off of the phone before you donate. Your older phone may protect a woman and her children.

Hope you find a good home for the older phones!

I really wish there was an incentive (don't know if i spelled that right) program with old cell phones. It's sad because I love the ink cartridges that you can return to Staples and get a 3 dollar coupon! That is brilliant........If only there was a good way for both the consumer and carriers to meet in the middle and get some kind of reward. Also Electronic waste is one of the fastest types of waste that is filling the land fills, and it is the worst for the environment!!!!!! Thank you G4TV for teaching me that!

I donate my phones to Hopeline which is a battered womens out reach to provide cell phones to women that may be in danger. Of course my phones usually are only good for recycling for money to get more phones because once I am done with a phone it is done.

Sounds like your local woman's shelter is a great place to recycle those 7730s!

I'm not sure of the rules for recycling with carriers, because each is going to be different. Let us know what your carrier says.

Okay, I came across something really cool. Apparently, many zoos also participate in phone recycling programs. The Calgary Zoo in Canada is partnered with Eco-Cell and all you have to do is bring your old or unused device to the zoo’s drop-boxes. The phones are then 100 percent recycled (awesome!) and the money recovered from the process is donated to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Last year, the Calgary Zoo collected 2,799 phones! Hey Becky, Just upgraded to the Storm 9550 and have an old 9530. Verizon was a no take on a recycle program. Any ideas of who might offers something for this? Desk top charger?

I recently upgraded to a Storm 2 9550 and I imagine that I could get a couple of bucks for my 8830, but will probably keep it tucked away as a backup just in case. I have a habit of keeping my previous phone until I am eligible for an upgrade a year later.

Hi, wwiseman, that's awesome that you want to recycle your device. Women's shelters often take old devices to help protect them after they leave shelters. While I was looking at websites, I found that most carriers took old or used devices regardless of whether you were with a different carrier.

I would recommend Googleing to look for local businesses that will take old devices. I often see specialized drop off boxes in popular electronics stores.

Let me know which method you pick and how it works out.
